During the winter I regularly found remnants of beach steps and fences swept up on my local beach. The compulsive forager and collector in me meant it was hard to pass these bits of wood up and consequently my carpad now has a messy collection of timber. My neighbours must wonder what I am up to. At one point my daughter commented that one day the Council would get the police on to me to reclaim some of their property! Many coastal communities around New Zealand are at threat with inundation from sea level rise and storm surges caused by climate change. Beach access stairs are constantly being eroded away and then stoically rebuilt by local councils. For how much longer?
